CFD responds to truck fire

Chester firefighters were called out to a truck fire next to the Randolph County Courthouse on Saturday and remained on scene for about a half hour.

According to Fire Chief Marty Bert, no one was around the vehicle when firefighters arrived around 5 p.m.

"The truck had no license plates and no insurance," he said. "When we got on scene it looked like the motor overheated and caught the plastic hoses and stuff on top on fire."

A witness, Eric Wright, told the Herald Tribune he was pulling into a street nearby and noticed the truck spewing white smoke.

"I popped the hood and started pouring water on the flames," he said.

Chester firefighters were paged back out early Sunday morning to the report of power lines sparking near the entrance to the sewage treatment plant. Bert said noted that this incident is believed to be a result of the thunderstorms that had passed through the area.
