Star Church presents 'The Raising of Lazarus'

ELDORADO – The Star Church Drama Team will present a three-act drama entitled: "The Raising of Lazarus" at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There is no admission charge.

Author/director Mike Phelps calls his interpretation a "dramactment," his own expression for an an amalgam of dramatization and re-enactment of the famous Bible story as written in the Gospel of John in Chapter 11. The passage tells the story of Lazarus being brought back to life by Jesus. According to the Gospel of John, the story is the seventh sign – Jesus' final miracle before his crucifixion.

In the Biblical rendition in John Chapter 11, the whole story of Lazarus' raising is told in just 44 verses. The Bible gives very few details or even inklings of what the major characters felt or experienced. Lazarus himself never speaks in the Bible story.

Phelps said that the Bible's lack of details is one of its greatest tools for forcing each reader to dive into the story, with each person immersing into the episode so as to "experience" the depth of the whole saga. Phelps noted that the Bible is purposely laconic and reticent on details, forcing each reader to provide his or her own viewpoint on each character's involvement. Thus, he said, this drama supplies some of those "missing" details as "possible" happenings to make the story not only come alive, but bring new relevance for modern times. The church has invited all to view the play.
