Delano Dwan Wasson

HEROD - Delano Dwan Wasson, 81, of Columbus, Indiana, died at 12:09 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, in Columbus Regional Hospital.

He was born Sept. 23, 1935, in the hills by Herod to Arthur Everett and Reba Etta (Johnson) Wasson. He married Barbara Ann Trost in a garden wedding at his parents' home in Hammond, Indiana, on June 26, 1955.

Mr. Wasson attended Indiana University and Moody Bible College. He often stated that the two most important decisions he had made in life was receiving Jesus as his personal Savior on May 9, 1958, and marrying Barbara.

Early in his professional career, he worked in accounting and information technology at Inland Steel and Cummins. He always said that one of his most enjoyable employment experiences was becoming general manager of the first McDonald's franchise in the state, in Hammond, Indiana. For the second half of his career, he and Barbara owned and operated Green Barn USA, a retail and wholesale produce company headquartered in Columbus.

Mr. Wasson was an active member of Parkside Baptist Church and served on many community committees and boards since moving to Columbus with his family from Hammond in 1969.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wasson; brother, Dennis (Martha) Wasson; children, Timothy (Debra) Wasson, Jeffrey (Patricia) Wasson, Jerome (Kimberly) Wasson, Beth (Glen) Haegele and Shawn (Tiffiny) Wasson; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janiece Ashworth; and infant sister, Gleta.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus, Indiana, with Pastor Jerry Day Sr. and Dr. William Bailey officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at the funeral home.

Burial services will be at noon (Central Time) Friday, Dec. 9, in Bethesda Baptist Church in Herod, on property that was donated by Mr. Wasson's great-great-grandparents, where many of his ancestors are buried.
