Police name man killed in shootout with trooper

Police allege that a gunman was killed Saturday morning after a manhunt and shootout with an Illinois state trooper

Donny Max Daugherty, 36, of Clifton, Tenn., was killed after he shot at a state trooper on Saturday. Daugherty was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service for a probation violation pertaining to a charge of possession of a weapon and an aggravated assault warrant through the Nashville, Tenn., Police Department, The Illinois State Police report.

Police did not name Daugherty as the suspect until Sunday night, waiting for the Massac County coroner to confirm his identity. Daughtery assaulted a Metropolis resident Friday afternoon, police report.

In a Saturday media release, the ISP detailed the events leading to Daughtery's death. According to police, an armed man entered a home Friday afternoon in Metropolis in Massac County, about 4:09 and assaulted a resident. The name of victim was not reported.

The suspect, still believed to be armed, fled on a motorcycle with local law enforcement in chase. He eluded police and abandoned the motorcycle in rural Massac County.

Early the next morning, about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, police received a call of gunshots in the Metropolis area. A person called saying that a man was in a neighbor's yard, appearing to have a hand gun, and the caller told police that three to four gunshots were heard, police report.

The ISP did not reveal the location from where the call came.

A Massac County deputy and a Metropolis police officer arrived and attempted to locate the suspect. Officers went toward the suspect's last known direction of travel. The officers reportedly heard a gunshot but were unable to locate the suspect.

ISP District 13 and 22 worked together. Another shot was fired and ISP District 13 sent additional patrol units. ISP helicopters and SWAT were called in.

About 9:30 a.m., Daugherty fired at an ISP trooper. The trooper returned fire, killing Daugherty. No officers were injured.
