American Coal seeks to close portion of Lone Oak Road for expansion

RALEIGH -- A crowd of about 25 people packed the Raleigh Township Hall Thursday to learn of American Coal's proposal to close a portion of Lone Oak Road in order to expand its Galatia Mine operations.

New sewage plans underway, new levee holes found

HARRISBURG -- Discussions of sewage dominated Harrisburg City Council's Thursday meeting. Engineer Jim Brown who will be writing up the sewage facility plan gave a presentation of three options for the sewage treatment plant that last was substantially renovated in 1969.

Laundry room fire extinguished

HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg firefighters extinguished a burning laundry room in a house at 130 W. Ogara St. Thursday night.

Police handle crashes into cemetery, jail

HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg Police arrested a Henderson, Ky., man Wednesday accused of driving while intoxicated into the Harrisburg City Cemetery and knocking three tombstones off their bases.

Jury finds Bowlby guilty on 19 counts of child sex abuse

COUNTY COURTHOUSE-- A jury found former Eldorado resident Brian K. Bowlby, 37, guilty on 18 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse Thursday evening following a two-day trial. He was found not-guilty of one count of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Shawnee National Forest welcomes new public affairs officer

SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST -- The Shawnee National Forest has a new public affairs officer. Amanda Patrick has taken the position vacated by long-time U.S. Forest Service employee, Becky Banker, who retired last July.

Muddy history, Elks beach, RV campground proposed to tourism board

SALINE COUNTY -- The Saline County Tourism Board is considering two proposals for developments on the east side of the Harrisburg levee. The board heard presentations from Muddy Village Administrator John Molinarolo regarding historical sites in Muddy and from John Gardner and Kerry Camp regarding Elkside, the complex of swimming, fishing, dining and recreational vehicle camping being planned by the Harrisburg Elks Lodge.

Sheriff handing out $500 scholarship

SALINE COUNTY -- Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown will be giving away a $500 scholarship from the Illinois Sheriff's Association.

Former Saline resident Brian Bowlby on trial for sex abuse

COUNTY COURTHOUSE-- The jury trial of a former Eldorado resident, Brian K. Bowlby, 37, is under way in Saline County. Bowlby is charged with 19 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, stemming from incidents that took place between 2001 and 2003.
