Nancy Lambert: Sign up now for 4-H robotics class, or take a chocolate factory tour

The Saline County 4-H Management Committee will hold a business meeting at 8 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the Extension office.

All committee members and other interested adults and youth are encouraged to attend. Committee members include one adult representative from each 4-H Club and the current Saline County 4-H Federation officers. We will be discussing and finalizing plans for our 2018 Saline County 4-H shows.

Ag Center and chocolate factory tour

Saline County 4-H is taking a tour of the Dixon Springs Ag Center, where our Pope/Hardin County Extension office is located, and the Chocolate Factory in Golconda. On Tuesday, June 19, we are meeting at the Saline County Extension Office at 10:30 a.m. to carpool down to the Ag Center. There we will tour the grounds and Ag Gardener Julie Zakes will show us the new High Tunnels and tell us what systems they use to maximize gardening there. We may be able to sample the produce and edible flowers!

We plan to eat our sack lunches there at the Ag Center before heading down to the Chocolate Factory. At 1 p.m., owner Linda Meherg will give us a tour of her kitchens and let us try our hand at creating our own chocolate candy. Participants should call the Saline County Extension Office by June 15 to RSVP. Then on June 19, bring a sack lunch (we will provide the drinks) and extra money to buy chocolates or ice cream for dessert.

There is no cost for this trip, but we need leaders/parents to transport their members/children.

Robotics Wednesday

Saline County 4-H has an exciting Robotics Workshop planned for Wednesday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Extension Office, 912 S. Commercial Street in Harrisburg. We invite youths ages 8 to 13 to join us for a fun introduction to the wonders of Lego Mindstorm EV3. Cost for this workshop is only $5 per participant and lunch and snacks will be provided. Because of space, we are limited to 20 participants. Call the Extension Office at (618) 252-8391 by Friday, June 15, to sign up for this fun day of science!

Dog obedience class

Saline County 4-H Dog Obedience classes are underway, and instructor Cheri White says that the youths are making great progress in both obedience and agility. Classes will continue each Tuesday evening through July 10. The Saline County 4-H Dog Agility Show is scheduled for July 17 at Cheri White's shop, and the Saline County 4-H Dog & Cat Show, which includes Dog Obedience, Dog Showmanship, and Dog and Cat Care, is scheduled for July 19 at the Saline County Fairgrounds.
