The Du Quoin Police Department is now accepting donations for its 16th-annual Shop with a Cop event.

Du Quoin Police Chief Les Vancil says the event is unique in that police do not just shop for one child that is recommended, but rather for all the children in the household that are under the age of 13.

On one evening each year in December, volunteer members of the Du Quoin Police Department and other police agencies in Perry County take 100 or more underprivileged children shopping at the Du Quoin Walmart for clothing and toys. The items are then wrapped, and just before Christmas, police officers deliver the presents to the families.

The average cost each year runs between $10,000 to $12,000, and no tax dollars are spent on the event. All proceeds come from the sale of local business ads on the annual police calendar, and from local citizens and group organizations.

All donations are greatly appreciated, and 100 percent of the donations go toward the annual Shop with a Cop event.

Those wishing to donate can do so in person at the Du Quoin Police Department or by mail to: Du Quoin Police Department, 304 E. Poplar St., DuQuoin, IL 62832. Make checks payable to "Du Quoin Police Association -- Shop with a Cop."
