Classical guitarist to perform at Harrisburg library

Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher will make his sixth local appearance on Monday, Oct. 9, in a recital at Harrisburg District Library.

The program begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Fletcher's appearance is co-sponsored by Friends of Harrisburg Library and the Cultural Arts Committee of Southeastern Illinois College. This program kicks off SIC's 2017-18 series; however, no ticket is required for attendance.

Fletcher is based in Detroit and New York City. He performs over 100 concerts each year and has critically acclaimed recordings on Centaur Records and Tower Hill Recordings. Some of his recordings will be for sale at the program, which is entitled "Music of Four Centuries."

The program runs the gamut from the Renaissance through the 20th century, featuring works by Bach, Paganini, William Walton and Isaac Albeniz. Fletcher also will perform some of his original transcriptions from Eric Satie.

Because music for classical guitar is relatively limited, Fletcher wants to continue the tradition of Andres Segovia in transcribing music from other instruments, particularly piano. In addition, he likes to commission new music.

Fletcher will be available to meet with audience members after the recital.
