Expect at least 13 candidates for Du Quoin mayor and commissioner in April election

If you thought boulevards were cluttered by campaign signs in the November election, you haven't seen anything yet.

By the newspaper's most recent count, there should be at least two candidates for mayor and 11 candidates for city commissioner in the April 7, 2015 municipal election.

Candidates for mayor are expected to be incumbent Mayor Rex Duncan and former finance commissioner Guy Alongi.

Candidates for commissioner at this writing are expected to be incumbents Yvonne Morris, Don Kunkel and Josh Downs as well as candidates Angie Roach, Harvey Smith, Gerald Whitley, Mike Ward, Joe Stephens, John Tilley, Dale Spencer and Chuck Genesio.

Candidates running for municipal office and school board seats are reminded that the filing period is Dec. 15 through Dec. 22.

In Du Quoin, candidates for all offices must complete a statement of candidacy, obtain at least 18 signatures of registered voters in the city limits and complete other minor paperwork. Petition packets must be filed at the City Clerk's office beginning Dec. 15 and running through Dec. 22 during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Candidates' names will be placed on the ballot in the order that filing occurred.

In the event all candidates show up at the same time, there will be a lottery for ballot positions.

Candidates say they do not expect to comment or campaign until well after the holidays.
