Josh Downs, incumbent police & fire Commissioner, has announced his plans to seek a second term on the Du Quoin City Council. Elected in 2011, Josh feels strongly about the great successes of the current council, while also focusing on moving Du Quoin forward in many areas. The accomplishments of this council are many including:
·New sidewalks and trees on Main Street;
·Installing new water lines on both Main and Washington Streets;
·Opening the solar park in the Industrial Park;
·Resurfacing of Main Street and Washington Street in the near future;
·Purchasing a new pumper truck for the fire department and several new patrol cars for the police department;
·Forming a business enterprise zone to spur redevelopment, which resulted in the newly opened Bottom Dollar Cost Plus Foods, the renovations of Chip Banks, and the planned Fenton"s Custom & Collision building. Also, the continuing use of all 3 TIF Districts, which have awarded thousands of dollars in grants to business owners to redevelop their building and directly led to the remodeling and rebirth of the historic St. Nick and more.
The positive impact all of these projects have had and will continue to have on Du Quoin is undeniable. In Josh"s role as police and fire commissioner, Josh states the city cannot put a price tag on the community"s safety and wellbeing. Josh said he will continue to do everything he can to protect our first responders who go to work every day to serve Du Quoin. With the city"s work on downtown"s deteriorating buildings, the Du Quoin Fire Department continues to inspect buildings and demand changes to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike in downtown Du Quoin.
While there have been many improvements in the last four years, Josh said he wants to continue to move Du Quoin forward. Like all municipalities across the state that rely on ever shrinking state funding to operate, Du Quoin must continue to obtain grants and keep all services at their current levels without raising taxes. Josh"s goals are simple- 1. Provide the best for the citizens of Du Quoin, 2. keep taxes Low, & 3. keep Du Quoin moving Forward.
Josh is employed as an account manager at Coca-Cola Refreshments in Du Quoin and previously served as secretary of the Du Quoin Park Board.
He has been married for a year and a half to Lindsi (Matyi) Downs and she is employed as an exercise specialist at Herrin Hospital. Josh is a 2008 graduate of SIU-C, having received a Bachelor of Science Degree in history education.
He is the son of Michael and Carol Downs and states he is always more than willing to speak with any citizen of Du Quoin and hopes to have the opportunity to continue moving the City of Du Quoin forward for the next four years if he is fortunate enough to be re-elected.
