  • Harrisburg’s efforts not enough in early season loss to Massac County

  • It’s a score that Harrisburg head coach Mike Tison would take every time out.
The Bulldogs shot a 145 in an early season preview match of three of the best teams in southern Illinois.
The dark cloud surrounding Harrisburg’s staunch score is that it was five stokes fewer than Massac County, which won a triangular match with Harrisburg and Mt. Carmel with a 140 Tuesday at Shawnee Hills Country Club.
Mt. Carmel finished third with a 159,
“I heard what our team shot and I was very pleased and thought a victory was ours,” Tison said. “It’s just that Masaac County continues to have very good golf teams and they are very difficult to beat. However 145 is a great team score and I would take it all year long.”
Bulldog sophomore Ben Fowler shared medalist honors with Massac County’s Luke Weineke as each finished with a 33.
Fowler’s scorecard included six pars and three birdies, giving him his best high school round to date.
Ryan Williams wasn’t far behind finishing with a 35, adding a birdie and an eagle on No. 6, but bogeyed No. 4 and 9.
Garrett Jenkins had a 37, while Patrick Bittle rounded out the final four scores with a 40.
Marcus Taylor had a 52 for Harrisburg, while Bryce Beal finished with a 53.
Masaac County 140, Harrisburg 145, Mt. Carmel 159.
    HARRISBURG: Fowler 33, Williams 35, Jenkins 37, Bittle 40, Taylor 52, Beal 53.
MASSAC COUNTY: Weineke 33, Burnham 35, Dudley 35, Willams 37.
MT. CARMEL: Kolb 36, Stipp 39, Golden 40, Thread 44.
