  • Prep Baseball: Five Bulldogs named to SIRR Ohio All-Conference Team

  • The Harrisburg High School baseball team was well represented on the Southern Illinois River-to-River Ohio All Conference team.
    In all, five Bulldogs were named to the team, including Brady Mayer, Matthew Phipps, Noah Vallette, along with Sykes and Cooper Thompson.
    Individually, Cooper Thompson led Harrisburg in hitting, finishing with a .462 batting average. The junior had 31 RBI on the season and a home run.
    Sykes Thompson hit .280 on the year, while driving in 13 and Mayer finished with a .321 batting average, finishing with 10 RBI.
    Phipps had 19 RBI for the Bulldogs, while finishing with a .375 batting average and Vallette drove in 18 and hit .333 on the season.
    On the mound, Sykes Thompson went 8-3 for Jay Thompson and Harrisburg, finishing with a 1.29 ERA in 54 innings pitched. The junior struck out 36, while walking just nine.
    Mayer had two saves, while going 1-0 for Harrisburg. He struck out three over 3.2 innings pitched, allowing one hit and two walks.
    Phipps also had a save, going 4-3 with a 1.75 ERA, including a no-hitter against Nokomis. Phipps struck out 44 this season over 52 innings pitched and walked 16, while allowing 13 earned runs.
    This season, Harrisburg finished 20-12 winning the school’s fifth straight regional and their 13th in the past 14 years.
    The Bulldogs won 20-plus games for the 21st straight season. Harrisburg’s season ended after a 7-6 loss to Chester in the semifinals of the Harrisburg Sectional. It was the fourth straight year Harrisburg lost in the sectional semifinals.
    The Bulldogs have nine sectionals, the last coming in 2010 and have made nine Sweet 16 appearances.
