  • Prep Baseball: Harrisburg takes two over weekend

  • The Harrisburg High School baseball team took a pair of games over the weekend, knocking off Murphysboro and Herrin at Dorris Heights Field.
    The Bulldogs blanked Murphysboro 10-0 in Game 1 and then rallied to knock off Herrin 8-2.
    In the win against the Red Devils, Sykes Thompson worked five innings, throwing a three hitter, while striking out one.
    Harrisburg wasted little time getting on the board, putting up two runs in the first inning, followed by another five in the second inning. The Bulldogs closed things out two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
    The Bulldogs had 11 hits on the day as Cooper Thompson led the charge with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.
    Matthew Phipps was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs driven in and three runs scored, while Bryce Emery was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
    Brady Mayer, Sykes Thompson, Noah Vallette and Carson Batts all had a hit and Vallette finished with two RBI. Mayer, Sykes Thompson and Batts all scored a run.
    In the win over Herrin, Harrisburg kept up the offensive attack, knocking out 10 hits as Sykes Thompson, Cooper Thompson and Phipps all had two hits. Cooper Thompson finished with two RBI, while Brennan Street, Nick Davis, Batts and Emery all had a hit. Batts drove in two runs, while Mayer, Street, Vallette and Davis all had one RBI.
    Emery scored two runs, while Davis, Vallette and Sykes Thompson scored a run.
    Phipps went the distance to record the win, striking out eight, while giving up five hits and two runs.
