  • A game that was firmly in their grasp was ripped away from the Bulldogs Thursday at Herrin as Harrisburg fell 4-3.
Harrisburg, losers of four straight, held a 3-1 lead until an error in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed the Tigers to tie the game at three.
Herrin drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh and after loading the bases, Cody Crosley singled, driving in Gavyn Gosha for the game winner.
Crosley picked up the win for Herrin (12-8, 3-3 SIRR Ohio) going the distance, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Harrisburg’s Sykes Thompson’s efforts were spoiled as the junior left hander gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out two and walking three.
The Bulldogs (12-10, 4-4) scored three runs in the top of the first inning when with one out, Sykes Thompson and Noah Vallette had back-to-back singles. Cooper Thompson then delivered an RBI double to score Sykes Thompson, while Brennan Street provided an RBI ground out, scoring Vallette.
Matthew Phipps closed out the scoring in the first with a single to score Cooper Thompson.
Herrin responded with a run in the bottom of the first and Harrisburg’s offense went silent as the Bulldogs had only two more hits (Phipps, Vallette) through the next five innings.
Harrisburg had a chance for an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Phipps doubled to left field. He went to third on a sacrifice-bunt by Blake Buchanan, but didn’t score as the next two batters went down with a strikeout and a groundout.
Harrisburg will host Herrin next Friday in a makeup game. The Bulldogs return to action today (Friday), playing host to Carbondale at Dorris Heights, slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
