  • The balloons released on Thursday evening rose into the evening breeze and scattered to the west of Egyptian Health Department’s Eldorado parking lot.
The crowd dispersed, better informed, more aware, of an increasingly serious problem.
Egyptian Health Department had held an awareness meeting and a balloon release commemorating those lost to prescription drug abuse in the department’s parking lot in Eldorado.
Speaking at the event were Dr. Michael Blain; Bob Wood, substance abuse program manager at Egyptian Health; pharmacist Jason Kasiar from Beck's Drug Store and Egyptian Health substance abuse counselor Stacey Miller.
In 2010 there were 38,329 drug overdose deaths nationally, three times the amount of people killed in alcohol or drug related traffic deaths said Bob Wood.
Every day in the U.S. 105 people die as the result of drug overdose, Wood said.
In 2011 2.5 million emergency department visits were the result of drug misuse and abuse. Among children under age 6, pharmaceutical account for about 40 percent of all exposures reported to poison centers, Wood said.
