  • The Galatia-Thompsonville softball team took one step closer to claiming the Greater Egyptian Conference regular season title with a 2-1 road win at Crab Orchard Wednesday afternoon.
Emily Reed picked up the win in the circle for the Bearcats, who improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in GEC play, with a three hitter.
Reed (5-0) went the distance, allowing one earned run and struck out eight, while walking five.
The Bearcats were led at the plate by Elizabeth Sloan, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brooke Burris was 1-for-3 with a solo home run and Reed finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Crab Orchard struck first with a run in the top of the first, but Galatia-Thompsonville quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame.
Reed led off with a double and stole third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Sloan knocked in Reed for the games first run.
Burris then led off the second inning with a solo shot, her first home run of the season that proved to be the game winner.
“That was a huge conference win against a very quality team,” Bearcats head coach Kevin Lewis said. “We know we’ll see Crab Orchard at least two more times, once at our place and probably in the regional, which will also be at our place.
“Today was a real pitchers duel and we did our part behind Emily making the plays we needed to make and didn’t commit any errors. It was just a well-played game.”
Galatia-Thompsonville is scheduled to be in action today (Thursday) at Carrier Mills.
