  • OBITUARY: Oliver Wendell Holmes

  • Oliver Wendell Holmes, 92 of Carrier Mills, was born in Williamson County on July 19, 1921, to the late James Wiseman and Mamie Burns Holmes. He was married to the former Evadean Stacey for 63 years. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2009.

  • Oliver Wendell Holmes, 92 of Carrier Mills, was born in Williamson County on July 19, 1921, to the late James Wiseman and Mamie Burns Holmes. He was married to the former Evadean Stacey for 63 years. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2009.
    He was a devoted member and elder of the Providence Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
    He was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America having last worked at the Will Scarlet Mine. He was a member of the Carrier Mills Blazing Star Lodge No. 458 AF & AM. He was a member of the Eldorado VFW. He was an Army Veteran of World War II in Battery B 447th with the rank of T5 where he served in five major battles including Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Battle of the Bulge and Rhineland. Wendell received a Bronze Star and five Battle Stars. Through his service to our country he made friends that lasted a lifetime.
    He is survived by two daughters, Linda Fritts of Stonefort and Rosemary (Henry) Cozart of Carrier Mills; a son, John (Patty) Holmes of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, James Henry (Teresa) Cozart of Creal Springs and John Patrick Holmes of Harrisburg; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Ridge Cozart of Creal Springs; a brother, Roy Holmes of Alamogordo, N.M.; two sisters, Ruth Dreisacker of Alabama and Paulma Clark of Christopher; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert Eugene Holmes and James F. Holmes; a sister, Shirley Adams; three infant sisters; and a son-in-law, Joe Fritts.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Jerry Williams will officiate with burial in Providence Cemetery with full Military Rites by the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legions and the National Guard Ritual Team. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. Friday until the funeral hour.
    Wendell requested that flowers please be omitted and those that would like to honor him make memorials to the Providence Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
