  • Harrisburg plays role of road warriors getting victories at Du Quoin & Benton

  • The Harrisburg High School girls’ basketball team remained the top team in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference, Ohio Division with a 62-57 win at Benton Tuesday night.
    With the win, Harrisburg improves to 3-0 in league play and are now 9-2 overall after Monday’s win at Du Quoin.
    Herrin (1-0) remains the only team in the conference without a league loss.
    Ashley Ferrell continued her tear on the opposition as she sunk in a team-high 20 points. Lindsey Murray wasn’t far behind with 14 points.
    Hanna Jones also finished in double figures with 11 points, while Alexa Burtis had 10 points.
    Devan Jones finished with four points, while Kelsey Hobbs had two points and Malayna Douglas had a free throw for one points.
    “It was a huge win,” head coach Jake Stewart said. “It was a very physical game and I was very proud of how we played down the stretch and played through adversity.”
    Harrisbrug was down through most of the second half and took their first lead of the half on a Murray pull up jumper.
    Harrisburg iced the game with Ferrell and Burtis both going to line knocking down free throws down the stretch.
    Nursing a three-point lead and five seconds to go, Ferrell stepped back to line where she knocked down two more free throws for the five-point victory.
    Harrisburg finished the game, going 13-of-18 from the foul line, shooting 72 percent and pulled down 33 rebounds, 23 of which came on the defensive end. The Bulldogs had eight steals against the Rangers
    Hanna Jones finished with a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds.
    The Bulldogs return to action Thursday when they travel to Massac County for another key River-to-River Ohio Division contest.
    Harrisburg 67, Du Quoin 34
    DU QUOIN — A strong second half helped propel the Harrisburg High School girls’ basketball team to a 34-67 win at Du Quoin Monday night.
    The Bulldogs outscored 46-20 in the last 16 minutes en route to the victory.
    Harrisburg put three players in double figures, highlighted by a game-high 21 points from senior Ashley Ferrell.
    The senior guard was 7-of-17 from the field for 41 percent and shot 5-of-7 from the foul stripe.
    Lindsey Murray made 12 points, going 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from the stripe, while H. Jones scored 10 points, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
    Harrisburg shot 40 percent from the field, connecting on 23-of-57 shots, while going 15-of-26 from the foul line.
    Kelsey Hobbs scored seven points for Harrisburg, while Alexa Burtis and Devan Jones each finished with five points. Whitney Younger had four points and Hayley Thompson tacked on three points.
    Page 2 of 2 - In the junior varsity game, Harrisburg fell 38-30, where Lilee Robinson and Alysia McGuire led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points a piece.
    Hannah Bartok, Morgan Jones and Brittany Hutchison all had two points. Toni Crisp and Miranda Foster each had a free throw for one point.
