  • Ferrell goes over 1,000th point mark as Harrisburg avenges loss to Redbirds

  • The Harrisburg High School girls' basketball team had plenty of reasons to be happy Tuesday night as they knocked off West Frankfort 55-50 to open up Southern Illinois River-To-River Ohio Division play.
    There was something for just about every occasion.
    Not only did the Bulldogs avenge an earlier season loss to West Frankfort, a defeat that came in the Harrisburg Invitational on a last second shot, but Kesley Hobbs' who was celebrating her 16th birthday Tuesday night get a gift-wrapped win.
    The night however, likely belonged to Ashley Ferrell as the senior guard surpassed the 1,000th point career mark as she achieved the feat at the 6:09 mark in the first quarter.
    Ferrell is the first person to score 1,000 since Laura Thompson shattered the school scoring record, finishing as the all-time leading scorer in both boys and girls' basketball with 2,067 points back in 2006.
    Ferrell scored a game-high 20 points on 5-of-14 from the field and a 6-for-7 clip at the free throw line, now has 1016 for the Bulldogs.
    Only one other player, Alexa Burtis, finished in double figures for Jake Stewart as the sophomore sunk in 13 points.
    "Any road win in the River-To-River is a great win," Stewart said. "I thought we defended well tonight and did a great job playing through our shooting drought."
    Harrisburg saw a 12-point lead cut to four points in a two minute span when the Redbirds drew to within 48-44 with 2:50 to play.
    Leading by three, 52-49 wtih 20.2 to play, Ferrell stepped to line to give the Bulldogs a little breathing room, knocking down the free shot to put Harrisburg up 53-49.
    "We let them back in the game by missing a couple offree throws," Stewart said. "But in the end, I was very prouod of my team for going out there, doing what needed to be done and getting the win."
    Harrisburg led 17-14 after one quarter of play, but was outscored 12-8 in the second quarter as the Bulldogs trailed by one, 26-25 going into halftime.
    Harrisburg came out on point in the third period, outscoring the Redbirds 13-8 and closed out the game outscoring West Frankfort 17-16 in the fourth quarter.
    Lindsey Murray and Devan Jones each added eight points for the Bulldogs, while Hanna Jones finished with four points. Kelsey Hobbs had two points.
    Harrisburg improves to 5-1 overall and is now 1-0 in the River-to-River Ohio Division. West Frankfort falls to 4-2 and 0-1.
