  • Robert R. Jenner, age 89, of Carbondale, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, after a short stay at the Jackson County Rehabilitation and Care Center.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1924, to Clarence Arthur and Ora (Dowling) Jenner in Sioux City, Iowa.
Bob grew up in Sutherland, Iowa. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1941. After high school he attended the State University of Iowa in Iowa City, earning a bachelor of arts degree in psychology on June 6, 1946. In June 1955, he earned a master of arts degree in speech pathology and audiology at Northwestern University in Chicago. After his graduation he worked with children in the public schools in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and Rock Island. In 1966 he and his family moved to Harrisburg where he worked for the Bowen Children’s Center and, after it closed, for the Anna Mental Health Center until his retirement in 1985. He loved working with children and also with adults who had lost their ability to speak due to stoke or other illness.
Bob married Beverly Ruth Gough on March 27, 1948, in Chicago. They were happily married for 65 ½ years and were only parted a few days at the end of his life.
Bob was a member of the Nature Conservancy, the Friends of Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, and the Friends of the Cache River. He was the founder/builder of what is now the River-to-River Trail and enjoyed hiking and camping. He was also well known for his fine furniture making, wood and stone carvings, and paintings in both acrylic and water color. For many years he raised guppies and other tropical fish and then became passionate about day lilies, growing many varieties and propagating one that bears his name. He loved birding, and after his retirement built over 650 bluebird houses and installed them on the River-to-River Trail.
Bob is survived by his spouse, Beverly of Carbondale; a daughter, Lorie (Howard) Allen of Carbondale; a sister, Marilyn (William) Stuart of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Sarah (Chad) Caldwell of Houston, Texas, and Nathan (Amy) Stahl of Oradell, N.J.; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Stahl; nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister; Jean Hagunbucher and two daughters, Gail Ann Jenner and Ellen Maureen Stahl.
Cremation rites will be accorded and private services will be held at the Richardson Hill Cemetery in Dahlgren at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to TIP of Illinois Hospice, 702 Chestnut St., Murphysboro, Ill. 62966 and/or Friends of the Cache River Watershed, 8885 State Route 37, Cypress, Ill. 62923.
