  • It was a bittersweet ending for Harrisburg's Mike Tison.
The Bulldogs boys' golf coach had arguably one of the best teams in southern Illinois all season. Harrisburg had a disappointing finish at the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Golf Tournament last week, finishing fourth.
The Bulldogs didn't fare much better at Regionals Tuesday at Kokopelli Golf Course.
Harrisburg finished fourth overall with a 333, 28 strokes off the lead that Massac County set by shooting a 305 for the team title.
Harrisburg missed out on sectional qualifying by four strokes as Marion finished second with a 325 and Mt. Carmel grabbed the last sectional spot with a 329.
"If we would have played as a team like we finished the year, our team would have advanced easily," Tison said. "That is the difficulty of a one-and done-tournament. All-in-all, this team earned a lot of respect from the coaches and other players with their efforts this year."
Following Harrisburg's 333 was Benton, carding a 339. Herrin was sixth after shooting a 341 and Murphysboro (342), West Frankfort (366) and Carbondale (421) rounded out the final three teams.
The silver lining in the day for the Bulldogs was the play of a pair of seniors.
Looking to go out in style, Harrisburg's Alexander Tison and Dillon Street shined Tuesday, both advancing to Saturday's Sectional at Salem.
Tison finished fourth as an individual, shooting a 77 and Street qualified as well after firing an 81 and finishing in a tie for 13th.
Ben Fowler finished with an 86, while Garrett Jenkins carded an 89. Ryan Williams came in with a 91 and Patrick Bittle put up a 94.
"I was very happy to see alexander and Dillon advance," Tison said. "Both finished the season strong and played well today."
