A nine-year-old Harrisburg boy, Daniel Wiley, died of an accidental gunshot wound Friday evening, according to the Clay County, Texas, Sheriff's Department.
Deputies say the incident occurred when Wiley's stepbrother tried to recover a dropped shotgun in the backyard of the victim's grandfather's home in Clay County, Texas.
Wiley was visiting his grandfather Danny Eugene Bowman, 56. Bowman had left to buy beer according to his testimony. Wiley was home alone with his stepbrother, 13-year-old Kenneth Sharples, and their 76-year-old great grandmother Shirley Crump, a disabled elderly who was barely ambulatory, according to the sheriff's probable cause affidavit.
Sharples admitted to removing the loaded shotgun from its normal resting place against the wall next to a cabinet in the living room. Bowman said the shotgun, a 12-gauge Winchester semi-automatic was always loaded to it's maximum capacity with three rounds. Sharples said the boys went outside to the rear of the grandfather's property and while the boys attempted to exchange the weapon it dropped to the ground. As Sharples grabbed for the gun, it went off striking Wiley in the face. Sharples said he reentered the house and placed the shotgun in the place where it was stored. Clay County Deputy Jason McGuire said that when he arrived on the scene he saw Wiley lying on the ground.
Deputy McGuire placed Bowman under arrest on the charge of abandoning or endangering a child. The charge is a a second degree felony.
