  • Ben Fowler is making big strides this summer — ones that he hopes — can lead to a promising fall.
The Harrisburg High School sophomore to be has spent his summer playing the Accelerated Golf Tour, aimed at college and advanced high school players. Last week, Fowler bested the field at Whitmoor Country Club in St. Charles, Mo., by firing a 73-76-149.
Fowler won by four strokes, taking out Ryan Keller of St. Charles and finishing five strokes better than Nashville's Chance Reuter who finished in third place.
Whitmoor County Club played 6,800 yards long for Fowler, whose success came with the flat stick and not the driver.
"I've been working really hard on my putting. I really feel like I have more confidence than ever," he said.
Fowler added his summer spent on the Accelerated Tour has been nurturing for the Bulldogs' rising star and at the same time, very challenging.
"My victory in Whitmoor was great for me," Fowler said. "It taught me I can play with the 'better' players. Winning is everything for me, I love to win. You feel like you are on top of the world."
Fowler broke his record for a best 18-hole round with a 73 on Day 1 at Whitmoor, but then followed that up with a 66 at Friday's Fowler-Bonan Foundation 'Clothes For Kids' Junior Golf Tournament at Shawnee Hills Country Club.
Fowler competes this week playing in the PGA Junior Series at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and then back on the Accelerated Tour at Norwood County Club in St. Louis.
