The Carrier Mills American Legion baseball team is one step closer to a district title thanks in part to a 16-6 victory over Carmi Tuesday night at Grayville.
Post 364 travels to Grayville tonight (Wednesday) to play Louisville for the District Championship. Carrier MIlls must beat Louisville twice to take the trophy.
Josh Bailey started on the mound going two innings before injuring his shoulder. The Carrier Mills product struck out one and allowed one run on one hit, while walking four. Lane Hutson relieved Bailey on the bump scattering eight hits, three walks, five runs and two strikeouts.
Post 364's Jarred Jackson got things going in the first with a single, followed by a Josh Bailey groundout moving Jackson to second. Dane Hish was issued a walk and Kyle Wise singled to scored Jackson. Austin Ferrell and Skyler Smith were walked to bring Hish in and Wes McGuire singled to score Wise, Ferrell, and Smith giving Post 364 a 5-1 lead after one inning.
In the second, Jackson reached on an error, stole second base and a groundout by Bailey plated Jackson to make the tally 6-1 after two
Post 364 scored four more in the third when Ferrell and Smith singled, McGuire was walked and Lane Hutson helped his own cause with an RBI single to score Ferrell. Jackson singled and Bailey walked. Darren Betz singled to score Hutson and Jackson.
In the fifth Carrier Mills tacked on four more runs to make it a 14-3 game after five.
In the seventh with 364 up by eight, Ferrell singled, Skyler smith doubled to score Ferrell, Hutson walked, Jackson walked, and Dalton Huckleberry laid down a perfect slap hit up the third base line to record the walk off single.
Jackson finished 2-5 with four runs, a stolen base and an RBI. Bailey went 0-2 with a run scored, while Huckleberry finished 1-2 with a run, stolen base and RBI. Betz finished 1-4 with a run and an RBI. Hish finished 1-3 with two runs and a stolen base, Wise went 1-5 with a run and RBI. Ferrell finished 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Smith also went 2-4 with two runs, a stolen base and one RBI. McGuire went 1-3 with three RBIs and a run score, while Hutson went 1-3 with a run, stolen base and RBI.
