  • Carrier Mills club grabs No. 1 seed for upcoming District 1 tournament in Grayville

  • Thanks in part to a 10-0 shellacking of Louisville Wednesday night, the Carrier Mills American Legion club will head into the 1st District Tournament Saturday as the No. 1 seed at Grayville.
    Gallatin County's Wes McGuire started the game for Post 364 going three innings after nursing a strained muscle in his lower back.
    McGuire gave up singles to the first two Louisville hitters followed by two strikeouts, a walked batter and another strikeout to finish the inning holding Louisville scoreless.
    Louisville then did not record another hit the rest of the game and only managed one base runner coming by way of a walk in the second inning.
    Austin Ferrell took over on the mound in the fourth, replacing McGuire who allowed two hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Ferrell allowed zero hits, no walks and struck out two.
    Carrier Mills got things going early when Jarred Jackson and Josh Bailey both reached via single. Darren Betz then hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice to get Bailey out at second. Dane Hish drove in Jackson for Carrier Mills' first run of the game.
    In the second inning, Ferrell reached on an error, Skyler Smith laid down a sacrifice-bunt to move Ferrell, and Kyle Wise singled to score Ferrell.
    Lane Hutson followed with a walk and a bad throwing cost Louisville two more runs as Wise and Hutson both scored. Bailey was walked and later scored on a throwing error,
    In the third Ferrell walked, Smith got a single and Wise reached base via the walk. Hutson produced a sacrifice-fly to score Ferrell.
    In the fourth, Betz was issued a walk, while Hish got a single and Ferrell got a single. Smith then got a single scoring Betz.
    In the fifth, Wise walked and Huckleberry flew out to deep right field, followed by a Jackson walk.
    Bailey was thrown out at first on a infield hit and Darren Betz Drove the ball deep to center field scoring Wise and Jackson for the walk off double.

    Jackson finished 1-for-3 with two runs, while Bailey was also 1-for-3 with a run scored. Betz went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and two RBIs. Hish had a 1-for-2 day with a run score, while Ferrell finished 1-for-2 with two runs. Smith went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Wise was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
