Harry O. Slankard, age 87, of Harrisburg passed away at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at her residence in Harrisburg.
Harry was born on Jan. 1, 1926, in Harrisburg to the late Bert and Edith (Hancock) Slankard. He first married Doris Cunningham. He later married Hisako Fujikawa on April 12, 1972. He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church and the Harrisburg American Legion. He served during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Surviving family members include his wife: Hisako Slankard of Harrisburg; son: Ken Slankard of Harrisburg; son: Jim Slankard of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter: Sharon Smith of Greenville, S.C.; daughter: Shirley Coll of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister: Stella Sjostrom of DeLand, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Edith (Hancock) Slankard, and sister Imogene Fontaine.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Scott Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legions and the National Guard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Memorial contributions may be made to McKinley Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
