Harrisburg Park District Director Rebecca Wyatt Nevitt is very pleased with the results of her six-month Fitness Training Class at the park district offices. The group achieved a total of 750 lost pounds.
"It's been nothing short of amazing," said Nevitts.
Class member Joni Sullivan said she lost 57 pounds.
"My whole family lost 120 pounds. It's kind of a common sense approach. It makes you aware of some simple things about refined foods and highly processed foods. The more exercise you get, the better you feel. Rebecca helps you work through the early pain, both emotional and physical," she said.
Angie Henson said, "It's better than any other program I've tried. I tried Jenny Craig and other prepackaged meal programs. They work, you lose it, but keeping it off is another thing entirely. This program teaches you to eat right at all times, for the rest of your life. It keeps it off."
The classes involve a combination of exercise and diet.
Nevitts said, "The exercise starts off slow and builds up. Walking and some weights are all it takes. We get up to 5 or 6 miles a day for some participants. The classes on diet and metabolism are what helps to keep the pounds off."
Henson said, "We are a lot more aware of what we eat. I have a lot more energy now. My goal is to get down to 200 pounds."
Her husband Billy said, "My goal is to weigh 225 pounds.”
Angie lost 39 pounds and Billy lost 65 pounds.
"My goal is to increase my walking until I can walk from State Street in Eldorado to Carrier Mills," Billy said.
Angie said her weight loss has affected other aspects of her routine in a positive way.
"My sleeping habits are better now. I only get up once a night. I just make healthier choices on everything," said Angie.
The classes meet at the Park District office on West Poplar Street at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. The next class begins on Monday, Aug. 19. Participants must be 100 pounds overweight to enter the class.
