  • Donald “Don” Williams, age 93, of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
    He was born on June 11, 1919, in Saline County to the late James Dewey and Eva Dean (Overton) Williams. On March 25, 1939, he married Kathleen Doris Pitts and she survives.
    Don was involved in the insurance business for over 45 years as a general agent for Lincoln National Life and as a founder of the Williams Insurance Agency now Williams and Associates Insurance. He was finance commissioner for the city of Harrisburg during the 1950’s. He was involved in the formation of the nursing school in 1956 and served on its advisory board. He was involved in the creation in 1961 of Saline Valley First Federal Savings and Loan and served as its only president until it was capitalized to form Bank South. He served on the committee to sign the agreement with Governor Stratton to establish the AL Bowen Children’s Center. He was active in support of Harrisburg Medical Center and served as the chairman of the board of directors for 26 years. He served eight years on the Governor’s advisory board to the Illinois Department of Insurance. He also served on several economic development groups over the years and was a developer and owner of several motels and restaurants in Southern Illinois and Kentucky. The Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce selected him as the 1995 “Citizen of the Year.” He felt the most pride in being instrumental in the creation of Southeastern Illinois College in 1959-60.
    Surviving family members include his wife: Kathleen Williams of Harrisburg; daughter: Doris Jean (Sam) Strader of Lexington, Ky.; son: Robert Williams of St. Louis, Mo.; son: James W. (Robyn) Williams of Cave-In-Rock; six grandchildren: Amy (Linden) Long of Lexington, Ky., Bryan (Angela) Strader of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nell (Ron) Fleming of Delavan, Wis., Kathleen (Phillip) Balma of Vernon, Conn., Maggie (John) Dorsey of Carterville and Wesley (Robie) Williams of Harrisburg; 11 great-grandchildren: Blake Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Ethan Long, Caleb Long, Ellie Long, Grace Strader, Clay Strader, Ronnell Fleming, Abbey Dorsey, Andy Dorsey, and Anna Belle Dorsey.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Bill Williams and granddaughter: Lisa Strader Johnson.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg. The Rev. Christine Cunningham and the Rev. George Schmink will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the Church. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois Blue East Team. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
