  • Kids get free meals for the summer

    Free summer meals are available while school is out at many locations throughout Southeastern Illinois including West Side Elementary in Harrisburg. Kids do not have to be enrolled in summer school to receive the meals.
    The program is funded 100 percent through the United States Department of Agriculture, USDA, and administered at the state level by the Illinois State Board of Education said Katie Klus, child nutrition coordinator for the program.
    Any child is eligible even if that child does not reside in Harrisburg said Harrisburg School Superintendent Dennis Smith Thursday.
    "The school board approved this program back in February. The fed will reimburse us $3 per meal through the state. We have to front the food but we will be reimbursed," he said.
    Meals will be served at West Side 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from starting on June 3 and lasting until July 26. There will be no weekend service and the program will be closed on July 4 and 5. The summer menu is published on Monday's on Page 3A of the Daily Register/Eldorado Daily Journal where the school menus are published throughout the school year.
    In Ridgway the Golden Circle, 110 N. Crawford will serve lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 3 through July 26.
    In Carrier Mills the meals will be served at Carrier Mills Elementary School from 11 a.m. to noon July 1 to August 2. The school is at 213 W. Furlong St.
    In Hardin County lunch will be served at Hardin County Elementary, Elizabethtown from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
