  • Gallatin County pounded out sixteen runs on a dozen hits in Monday's 16-2 six-inning win over Elverado at Dowell Park. The Falcons had just one hit through the first four innings and finished the game with six.
Brian McClanahan got the start for EHS and, all things considered, pitched fairly well. The left-hander gave up eight hits in four-plus innings on the mound, but had to deal with six errors committed by the Falcons defense, five of them coming in a six-run third for the Hawks. Only four of the ten runs given up by McClanahan were earned.
The only serious jam McClanahan got himself into was in the top of the fifth when Hawks Marcus Wargel, Tyler Crayne and Wes McGuire all hit safely to start the inning. All three would score, and Alec Valerius was called upon to finish out the game on the hill for Elverado.
By the time the Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Collin Hester, the hole was far too big to climb out of. When Ethan Keller raced home on the base hit by Hester it made the score 10-1, momentarily preventing a short-game win.
    Wargel (2-4, 2 R, 2B, BB), Crayne (2-3, 2 R, 2 BB), Daine Hish (2-4, 2 R, HBP), Jared Jackson (2-5, 2 R, 2B) and Mitchell Ramsey (2-3, 2 R, 2 2B, BB) each had two hits for the victorious Hawks.
Keller (2-4, R), McClanahan (2-3, BB), C. Hester (1-4, RBI) and Austin Hester (1-1, R) had the hits for the Falcons. Sean Patrick added an RBI with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the sixth.
McGuire picked up the pitching victory for the Hawks before yielding to Crayne in the late innings.
Elverado travels to Zeigler-Royalton on Tuesday, and Vienna on Thursday.
    Cobden 12,Carrier Mills-Stonefort 8
COBDEN - A late rally by the Carrier Mills-Stonefort High School baseball team wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell to Cobden 12-8 Monday.
Carrier Mills came out of the gate, putting up two runs in the top of the first. Cobden took a 4-2 lead after two full innings, but the Wildcats knotted the score at four with another two runs in the top of the third.
Carrier Mills-Stonefort tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, but the Appleknockers managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, before exploding for five in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding lead.
Carrier Mills was able to put up three runs in the top of the seventh, thanks in large part to a two-run home run by Josh Betz.
