  • The United States Postal Service has issued a reminder to pet owners that their dogs can pose a safety hazard to letter carriers and should be properly restrained or delivery will be suspended said Donna Denny, Harrisburg Postmaster Wednesday.
Letter carriers working in central and northeastern Missouri and Southern Illinois sustained 131 dog bite injuries last year, she said.
Although the Postal Service has reduced the number of dog bite injuries in recent years by promoting public awareness of pet owner's responsibilities and by training letter carriers to protect themselves, unrestrained dogs continue to pose a threat to children, letter carriers and anyone working or playing outdoors.
To reduce the potential for injury mail delivery may be suspended until the dangerous dog or other pet is restrained warned the Postal Service.
