Saline County Taxing officials at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 will present a program on taxation in Saline County at the Harris-Pruett Building in Harrisburg.
Danny Ragan, Saline County collector, will give an overview of the structure of government in the county and the amounts of tax collections used to support the various taxing districts. He will also speak on the tax collection procedure and delinquent taxes.
Sheryl Pearce, chief county assessing official, will describe her statutory duties in placing assessments on properties, the appeals process and explain the exemptions that property owners may be eligible for.
Kim Buchanan, county clerk, will explain how taxing districts set their levies and how she applies them to the assessed value of a parcel. She will also tell how her office handles delinquent tax redemptions.
“With a lot of misinformation being relayed as fact, and wrongful accusations being made, we three got together and thought we could best get the truth out to the public with a meeting like this. We don’t have any idea how many people will attend, but we are hoping to attract a good crowd. I’d like to see real estate people, business operators, and officials from other taxing districts, along with interested property owners attend,” Ragan said, in a prepared release.
“We will not let it turn into a gripe session, but we will explain the avenues that dissatisfied taxpayers can follow to plead their case,” added Pearce.
Clerk Buchanan related that, “Some people have legitimate complaints or questions, and just don’t know where to go for answers. After they attend this meeting, they should be able to see which office is responsible for what duties.”
The seminar will begin at 6:30 at the Harris-Pruett Building. Everyone is invited to attend.
