I made a pumpkin ale back in November, and thanks to my laziness this winter I bottled in January.
I’ve never made a pumpkin ale before, and so I bought a kit from Beer, and Wine Hobby in Woburn. Great price, and they were very helpful. I can’t say enough positive things about them. So, how did the beer come out?
First, it pours a nice orange/brown color. The head is not as foamy as I had hoped it would be, and fades very quickly. The taste is not what I expected. It is not as spicy as I like, and runs on the sweet side. I couldn’t taste any hops, and there is no bitterness at all. Its also a very forgettable beer, and one of the few beers I’ve made that I’m disappointed in how it came out.
I have no one to blame but myself for this though. I know letting it sit for far too long probably did a horrible job on it. I think it ended up being 6 weeks in the primary, and 6 weeks in the secondary fermentor.
The good thing is that I bought two kits, so I can make it again. The next time I’ll let it sit in the primary for about 10 days, and then transfer it to the secondary, and let it sit only 7 days and then bottle. That should make a difference in how it comes out, or at least I hope so.
