Eldorado Fire Chief Mike McKinnies gave Eldorado City Council an update on the storm siren protocol during the Tuesday night council meeting. He said some in the community have asked him for clarification on the sirens.
The sirens went off Jan. 29, the night a severe storm entered Saline County and an F-2 tornado damaged or destroyed many homes in Galatia. It also sounded during the regular testing 10 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month.
McKinnies said the city’s four sirens will continue to sound as long as the severe weather threat exists.
“It’s telling them to go inside, turn the TV on and take cover,” McKinnies said.
There is no “all clear” siren. McKinnies said no one in the city can take on the responsibility of telling citizens any storm has passed and there is no longer risk of danger.
Police Chief Shannon Deuel also asked residents not to call central dispatch to ask if a tornado is coming when they hear the sirens. When a storm causes damage or injuries, the phone lines will need to be open to receive those emergency calls.
Public Properties and Fire Commissioner Jeff Minor reported to the board there will need to be some repairs made to the Community Center. Gutters and downspouts have been replaced since they were damaged by weight of the snow and roof work now appears to be needed since water appears to be leaking in in areas.
Minor also reported he is having trouble getting in contact with Glass Doctor in Harrisburg to fix a door he says was improperly installed in the west entrance to the police station used by telecommunications. He said the issue has been ongoing since the door was installed three or four months ago.
He reported he has consulted with City Attorney C. Mart Watson about the city’s legal recourse.
Water Superintendent Tom Hosman got council approval to purchase 24 water meters per month at a cost of $2,548, the schedule put in place last year.
“It will probably be five years to get it done, but we’ll get it done,” Hosman said.
Street Superintendent J.B. James said the city has rocked over 100 alleys since the December snow and will begin patching roads when the weather is warmer.
Council has been consulting with Saline County Highway Engineer Jeff Jones regarding street signs and have found a vinyl sign make for sale for $5,757. The machine makes the vinyl lettering for metal signs. That would allow the street department to replace missing street signs quickly and could even open a possibility of new revenue through selling street signs to other municipalities, Mayor Rocky James said.
