Joseph W. "Joe" Thornton age 73 of Carrier Mills passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home with his family at his side.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1939, in Stonefort to the late James Thornton and Pauline Miller Bean who survives. On Aug. 14, 1960, he married the former Donna Owen and she survives. He was a retired coal miner and a United States Air Force veteran. He was a protestant by faith, a member of Blazing Star Lodge 458 and Carrier Mills American Legion Post 364. Joe loved to fish, loved his farm and especially loved his family.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his mother, Pauline Bean of Marion; sons, Jimmy Joe (Kimberly) Thornton of Paducah, Ky.; Brian Thornton of Carrier Mills; Donny Joe Thornton of Carrier Mills; one brother, James Henry (Cheryl) Thornton of Marion; six grandchildren, Brooke Thornton, Amber Thornton, Caleb Dean Thornton, Jimmy Joe Dunn, Paige Hobbs and Aaron Hobbs; two great-grandchildren, Kenya and Davion Beasley; a brother-in-law, David (Paula) Owen of Marissa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, James and Gladys Thornton; and his stepfather, Harold Bean.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Harl Cockrum officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. on Thursday. For those who wish memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
