At best, Harrisburg was looking at going into overtime.
Shelby Boer had different intentions.
The senior forward grabbed a missed free throw attempt by Lindsey Murray and made the outback with less than eight seconds to play to give Harrisburg a 52-50 win over Massac County Thursday night at Davenport Gymnasium.
And although Boer made good on the missed free throw, the entire setup was made possible by a host of Bulldog players.
Down by one with less than 20 seconds to play, Hanna Jones stepped in front of a Massac County pass, coming up with the steal and hitting Lindsey Murray on the outlet, who went to the rim and was fouled with 8 seconds to play.
Murray hit the first free throw to tie the game and then Boer made the game-winner.
"What a huge play by Hanna and a great job by Lindsey for attacking the basket and getting fouled. Shelby made a huge play for us just by playing hard. Thats what it takes to win games in this conference. (Ashley) Ferrell handled the ball all night and did a great job of getting it to where it needed to go. This was a huge win for us and our program. I couldn't be any happier for our girls."
Harrisburg did hold an eight point lead in the third quarter, thanks largely in part to putting Massac County in foul trouble in the second quarter and making eight free throws en route to outscoring the Patriots 16-11 in the second period.
"Once we get a good size lead we just have to learn how to play with it and take care of the ball," Stewart added.
Both Ferrell and Murray led Harrisburg in scoring as each finished with 11 points. Hanna Jones and Boer each tacked on seven points, while both Malayana Douglas and Whitney Younger finished with five points. Devan Jones scored four points.
The Harrisburg junior varsity team improved to 6-0 with a 51-36 victory.
Alexa Burtis led all scorers with 15 points and Kaitlyn Hutchison tacked on 12 points. Kelsey Hobbs finished with five points, while Taylor McDaniel and Hannah Walker each had four points. Brittany Reynolds tacked on three points, while Alysia McGuire, Hayley Thompson, Lilee Robinson and Brittny Banks all scored two points.
Harrisburg will host Hamilton County on Saturday with the junior varsity team kicking things off at 2 p.m.
