Two Stonefort residents were killed in a crash Saturday night on state Route 145 just south of Reynolds Cemetery Road in southernmost Saline County.
Deana L. Smith, 49, with passenger Darryl G. Smith, 50, at 8:08 p.m. was driving a Chevrolet Blazer south on the highway when for unknown reasons she lost control of her vehicle striking the east guardrail, according to a release from Illinois State Police District 19.
She overcorrected causing the vehicle to go into a spin, the vehicle left the east side of the road, struck a culvert and rolled, according to the release.
Darryl Smith was ejected from the vehicle.
The Saline County Coroner’s Office pronounced Deana Smith dead at the scene. Darryl Smith was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, Ind., where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Assisting at the scene were the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Carrier Mills Fire Department, Harrisburg Fire Department, Saline County ES and Bishop’s Towing.
Firefighters responded to search for victims. Harrisburg firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find Darryl Smith.
Neither crash victim was wearing a seat belt.
