  • After learning earlier in the day that Harrisburg was ranked No. 2 in Class 2A in the Illinois Associated Press Top 10 boys' basketball team, the Bulldogs took that ranking and made it look even better in a 78-28 dismantling of Hamilton County in the nightcap of the Harrisburg Invitational at Davenport Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (2-0) had little problem with the outmatched Foxes (0-2), forcing them into 15 first half turnovers, which led to easy buckets in transition as Harrisburg took a 41-18 lead at halftime.
In the win, Harrisburg only put two players in double figures as Eli-Taborn Scott led all scorers with 20 points and Capel Henshaw put up 12 points.
More so, Harrisburg head coach Randy Smithpeters will take the balanced scoring as he was able to clear his bench, early and often Wednesday, as each member of the Bulldogs found the scoring column.
Smithpeters believes that opportunity will help his club as they now prepare for a Calloway County (Ky.) team Saturday in the highly-touted Marshall County Hoop Fest at 1 p.m. at Reed-Conder Gymnasium in Draffenville.
"You get minutes for some of your other kids out on the floor," Smithpeters said. "One of the thing I told my assistants was, 'Lets watch these guys and see how they do.' It tells you a little more about decisions you want to make in a game, like Saturday at 1 p.m."
Smithpeters added that a point of emphasis was to not just play with quantity, but also play with quality.
"We thought we were better than them and we are," he said. "I don't mean that badly towards them, we just have a really good team. We wanted to come out and play well, play with quality. I think we did that. We executed and there are things that we want to get better at."
Harrisburg finished the night forcing Hamilton County into 23 turnovers and outrebounding the Foxes 24-10.
Hamilton County was led in scoring by Nathan Anselment, who had all of the Foxes scoring in the first half with 13 points.
Foxes head coach Keith Welch felt the job his team did defensively — at times — was encouraging.
"I mean, forcing Harrisburg to make six or seven passes for layup as opposed to one or two, is something that we did build on.
"Obviously, they're an unbelievably athletic team, up and down the lineup, and they out-athlete us at every position, so we just try to build on our defense and at times, did a really good job."
Smithpeters now turns his attention to a Laker ballclub who is 1-0 on the season after a 65-57 win over Lone Oak Tuesday night. Calloway County will play Reidland on Friday night, before playing Harrisburg Saturday.
Page 2 of 2 - "We have two days to practice now for a very good Calloway County (Ky.) team and we'll need that practice and need to improve on some of the things we did tonight to compete with them," Smithpeters said.
"They are a team that has some size with a 6-foot-6 and a 6-5 kid that starts and another 6-5 kid on the bench. They have a 6-2 guard that is very athletic and two other people that can shoot the ball. We have to do things well to be able to compete in the game and that is the kind of game we want and the kind of team we want to compete against to make ourselves better."
