  • Southeastern Illinois College will host a Veterans Recognition Ceremony and reception 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center in Harrisburg.
The keynote speaker will be William Ralph Harriman, of Eldorado, discussing his experiences while serving in the Korean War. Harriman was a corporal technician in the United States Army’s 135th Medical Detachment and 84th Construction Engineers. Harriman was stationed in Munsan, South Korea from November 1952 through February 1954. He earned the Korean Service Ribbon with two bronze service stars, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Merit Unit Citation with two overseas bars.
As part of the ceremony, the Eldorado Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be presenting the colors. Sharon L. Tanner and Sharon R. Pyle of the Michael Hillegas Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will perform the laying of the wreath. SIC’s own Pre-K class in the Mary Jo Oldham Center for Child Study will be leading the Pledge of Allegiance and singing; and SIC sophomore music major, Jared Mitchell of Norris City, will honor the veterans with a rendition of America the Beautiful.
A chili fundraiser will be held prior to this event to raise funds for a donation to the VFW, and every dollar raised will be matched by the SIC Foundation. The donation will be presented to the VFW by Tricia Johnson, SIC director of institutional advancement and Foundation executive director at SIC.
