  • Saline County Sheriff’s Deputies Sunday investigated a crash just north of Herod believed caused by a deer on the highway.
Ashley K. Smith, 18, rural Elizabethtown, was driving south on state Route 34 at 8:39 p.m.. About a mile south of Somerset Road —  negotiating a curve — she drove off the road to strike a fence, ditch and several trees on Robert Meyers’ property, according to a sheriff’s accident report.
Passenger Jodee L. Mabrey, Elizabethtown, said Smith had swerved to avoid a deer.
Smith was flown by medical helicopter to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
Neither Mabrey or passenger Michael D. Henderson of Paducah, Ky., were hurt.
