  • When Brandon Hampton looks across the field at Johnston City there is a lot the fifth year head coach could be envious, but at the same time, appreciative about when it comes to the Indians.
It could be athletes, it could be wins, it could be post season success. But it all surpasses what Brandon Hampton's ultimate goal is.
"They have a proud football tradition," Hampton said. "Football is very important in that town and they are very well coached from top to bottom at all levels. That's what I want. That's what we are trying to do here and I think we're getting closer."
Arguably two of the top Black Diamond Conference teams the last couple of years will square off Friday night at Boz Adams Field at 7 p.m. in a key conference game.
Eldorado needs to knock off the Indians to all but assure them at least a share of the BDC crown at this point as Chester sits at 5-0 and has already played perennial powerhouses Carmi-White County and the Indians.
Hampton is all too aware of how important this game is — as it seems to be — each and every year.
"You see them on film. They're a good football team with a ton of good backs and their quarterback is a returning all-conference kid. When you look at their roster, their roster has more returning all conference kids than anyone we'll see."
After a Week 1 win over Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn, JC was hammered at home by Carmi-White County. The Indians then rattled off two straight before being throttled last week by Chester.
"In some of those bigger games, they just haven't gotten a break or two and its gotten away from them," Hampton said. "History tells you, and if you look at their schedule and you look at anyone else, after a loss and the kind of loss they suffered last week against Chester, it's pretty easy for the coach to get their attention. After they got beat by Carmi, they turned around and throttled C-Z-R. I'm sure after the loss to Chester, (Coach Dan Mings) will have their attention all week in practice and have them ready to play."
