JUCO Hoops: Vols sweep weekend to start season

John A. Logan's matchup with Mineral Area was more than just about being the season opener. Friday night.
Mineral Area, who is ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA preseason poll and the No. 6 Volunteers squared off at Poplar Bluff in the Three Rivers Classic against a Cardinal ballclub that went through last year's regular season undefeated and handed JALC a 90-74 loss at Carterville.
JALC flipped the script Friday and used defense as its calling card, knocking off Mineral Area 80-65.
The Vols (1-1) put three players in double figures as Bradley transfer Sean East led JALC with 17 points, while freshman forward KJ Debrick tacked on 11 and Indiana State transfer Cobie Barnes tossed in 10 points.
Sarion McGee and Cam Alford both netted nine for the Vols, who shot 43 percent from the floor and 23 percent from the free throw line.
Derrick Reeves added eight points, while Tuhaute Williams scored seven points. Pinckneyville's Dawson Yates came off the bench to score six points, knocking down a pair of first half 3-pointers, while Teon Nesbitt tacked on three points.
Mineral Area got a game-high 21 points from Jamir Price and Brett Thompson put in another 16 for the the Cardinals (1-1).
The Cardinals, who beat Lake Land 91-62 in their season opener Wednesday, went 17-of-23 from the foul line, shooting 73 percent.
Logan grabbed 29 rebounds on the evening, handed out 11 assists and had 11 turnovers.
The Vols had an eight-point 40-32 lead in the first half, exchanged five lead changes and had four ties with Mineral Area.
In the second half, McGee gave Logan its biggest lead of the game (15 points) with a bucket at the 14:04 mark, giving the Vols a 56-41 advantage.
Mineral Area got as close as nine with 6:55 to play after a basket by Manu Musemena, cut the lead to 66-57.
Logan would end the game on a 14-8 run.

Sean East scored a game-high 25 points in leading the Vols to a 10-point 76-66 win over Three Rivers Community College and a weekend sweep to start the season.
Tujautae Williams also finished in double figures, scoring 17 points.
Cobie Barnes netted nine points for the Vols, while Cam Alford came off the bench, scoring six points, while Pinckneyville's Dawson Yates finished with five points. KJ Debrick and Sarion McGee each flipped in four points, while Derrick Reeves and Teon Nesbitt both tacked on two points.
Marion's Jackson Connor grabbed two defensive rebounds.
