Angelly let go as Harrisburg High School football coach

At Tuesday night's Harrisburg School Board meeting, Gabe Angelly was let go as head football coach for the Bulldogs, according to board minutes.

Angelly took over in 2017, replacing Al Way, and in four seasons went 8-24. His best season was his first when Harrisburg finished 4-5. Since then, the Bulldogs were 2-7 in 2018 and 0-8 in 2019. This past season, HHS was 2-4.

After going winless in 2019, and no football because of COVID-19 in the fall of 2020, Harrisburg opened up the spring season of 2021 with a 22-12 win over Massac County. The Bulldogs were then shut out by Benton 42-0 and lost to Murphysboro 27-0. Harrisburg responded with a 35-22 win over Herrin, but closed out the season with a 23-13 loss to Fairfield and a lost to West Frankfort 23-12.

Harrisburg hasn't made the playoffs since 2015 - a year the Bulldogs went 7-3 under Way - losing to Quincy Notre Dame 47-28 in the first round of the 4A playoffs.
