Cobden's Franklin, Mt. Carmel's Applebey highlight AP All-State Team

From seniors to freshmen - from big schools to small schools - this year's Associated Press 1A & 2A All-State boys basketball team had a little bit of everything.

A pair of southern Illinois players each made the First Team in both classes as Cobden's Noah Franklin took home the honor in 1A and was joined by Mt. Carmel's Kaleb Applebey in 2A.

Franklin, was the second biggest vote getter in Class 1A as he made the First Team and will be attending Southwest Baptist to play basketball was AP All-State honorable mention last year and was the Player Of The Year for The Southern Illinoisan this past season.

Franklin was a triple-double threat almost every night, averaging 21.1 points per game and 11.7 rebounds a night to go along with 6.6 assets for a 18-0 Appleknocker team that finished No. 1 in the AP poll.

Franklin finished his career with 2,015 points, 1,052 rebounds, 507 assists, 146 steals and 152 blocks.

Mt. Carmel's Applebey was All-State second team last season and averaged a double-double of 19.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists for a 15-2 club sharing the No. 2 ranking in the final AP state poll. Applebey, who will be playing baseball at nearby Wabash Valley and then transferring to the University of Kentucky, shot 64.3 percent from the field and scored a season-high 31 points in a loss to 3A Mount Vernon.

Back in Class 1A, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield's Joe Melton was named to the Second Team, while Taj McKinney (Wayne City), Kannon Webb (Goreville) and Garrett Gunter (Sesser-Valier) were all named to the Honorable Mention Team.

In Class 2A, Fairfield's Landon Zurliene was named to the Second Team, while Reece Johnson (Benton), Dre Scott (Pinckneyville), Buzz Ritzel (Nashville), Beau Stipp (Mt. Carmel), Isaac Hosman (Massac County), Austin Brown (Johnston City), Calvin Clemons (Murphysboro), JJ Sweatt (Massac County) and Noah McElravy (Fairfield) were all named to the Honorable Mention Team.
