HERRIN -- The Marion High School girls tennis team collected enough points to win the Herrin 1A Sectional on Saturday and claim the first sectional title in Marion tennis history.
The Lady Wildcats racked up 21 points to win the championship plaque and edge Herrin by one point, with Benton and Carbondale both totaling 18 points.
As for state qualifying, Marion's advancers are Nicole Szidik and Ana Cuartas in singles, who both lost in the semifinals and had to play each other for third place.
Szidik won that matchup against her usual doubles partner by a 6-4, 6-1 sweep.
Herrin is sending a sectional singles champion and a doubles team to the 1A state tournament.
Reagan Ridgway won the singles title for the fourth straight year, beating Carbondale's Sophie DiBiasie in the finals 6-0, 7-5.
And in doubles, Bryndle Burks and Kelby Weber finished second to Benton's Kaitlyn Younger and Makinley Tonn. Although Benton won that match 6-1, 6-0, the second-place finish is Herrin's highest ever in doubles at a sectional.
The state tennis tournament begins Thursday in the Chicago area.
