CHS golf has good first outing in home triangular

The Chester High School golf teams had their first athletic competition of this season on Aug. 16 as the 2017 season kicked off with a triangular match against Gibault Catholic and Steeleville at the Chester Country Club.

For the day, the Yellow Jackets and Lady Yellow Jackets did rather well. The Chester girls finished first and the boys placed second.

The Yellow Jackets boast a 13-man roster this season with two seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen. Of those 13 athletes, only three are returners from last year.

Seniors are Lake Fogerson and Clay Herrell. Juniors are Jakob Cushman and Jacob Wingerter.

Sophomores are Chett Andrews, Wes Carpenter, Ronin Doiron, Ian Reith and Michael Wingerter.

Freshmen are Jordan Hughes, James Jarrett, Jaden Mott and Ryan Whitley. Only Fogerson, Herrell and Wingerter played last year in 2016.

In the Boy's Division, Gibault was the winner with 168 strokes. Chester finished second with 184, and Steeleville rounded out the competition with 188.

Chester's rookie golfer, Jarrett James, was the low medalist with a 3-over-par 39 strokes. Lucas Herrmann of Gibault was the runner-up with a score of 41.

Gibault was led by Lucas Herrmann who shot 41. He was followed by Zach Heet and Cam Toenjes with 42 apiece, Logan Doerr (43), Johnny Adams (44) and Ryan Swindle (51).

Other Yellow Jacket scores were Jacob Wingerter (45), Jakob Cushman (46), Jaden Mott (54), Chet Andrews (60) and Ian Reith (65).

Chester had a second team playing for practice. This group shot 261 for their top four scores. Michael Wingerter led this group with 64 strokes, followed by Ryan Whitley (65), Jordan Hughes (66) and Clay Herrell (66).

Wes Carpenter shot 72 and Lake Fogerson shot 73.

The Lady Yellow Jackets have a roster of seven golfers, including two seniors, four sophomores and one freshman. Of these ladies, five players are returning from last year.

Senior golfers are Hanna Bert and Alyse Vasquez. Sophomores are Autumn Dunn, Parker Knippa, Alyssa Place and Mallary Vasquez.

The lone freshman is Samantha Eggemeyer. Bert, Alyse Vasquez, Knippa, Place and Mallary Vasquez played during the 2016 season.

In the Girl's Division on Aug. 16, there were only two official teams - Chester and Gibault. Steeleville only had two golfers and did not qualify as a team.

The winner was Chester with 238 strokes, with Gibault taking second place with 244. The low medalist for the match was Gibault's Ashley Oversage with 47 strokes.

Chester's Alyse Vasquez was the runner-up with 52 strokes.

Other Chester results were Hanna Bert (57), Samantha Eggemeyer (64), Mallary Vasquez (65) and Alyssa Place (65).

Steeleville was led by Caitlyn Schwartz, who shot 55. Reagan Grese shot 56. The Lady Warriors needed two more golfers to have an official team score.

The Chester Lady Yellow Jackets are coached by head coach Chris Toledo and assistant coach Paul Zemlyn.

"The girls work hard and they are wonderful kids," Zemlyn said. "Three of the girls are really inexperienced.

"The other four played last year and should be better than they were in 2016."

"Alyse Vasquez was a regional qualifier last year and will probably be our leader," Zemlyn continued. "Hanna Bert and Mallary Vasquez will also be leaders. The team as a whole will be better at the end of the season."
