C. Tate Miller, 15, a member of Boy Scout Troop 103 in Mt. Vernon, recently installed two kayak launches at Rend Lake as part of his Eagle Scout project.
"I knew I wanted to do a conservation-based project to help my community," Miller said. "When I met with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last year they were excited with my idea of kayak launches. My initial project idea was to build a launch, but after discussions with the Corps we shifted to a more conservation-friendly install. The launches will help paddlers enter and exit the lake easier with less disruption to the natural habitat. I am excited to be working with the Army Corps of Engineers on my Eagle Scout project."
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rend Lake recently released a guide that identifies waterway trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced kayakers. The kayak launches will be one of the projects that will help support this increasingly popular sporting activities on the lake.
Miller is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and is a sophomore at Mater Dei High School in Breese.
