Eugene 'Gene' Stevens of Carbondale

Eugene "Gene" Stevens, 94, of Carbondale passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, at Herrin Hospital.

He was born April 19, 1927, in Carbondale to Floyd and Sylvia (Glascow) Stevens.

On Aug. 27, 1948, he married Evelyn Truenow. They shared 55 years of making wonderful memories. Evelyn preceded him in death on June 6, 2003.

Gene served his country proudly in the United States Army. He enlisted from Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. During World War II, in Germany, he worked in hospitals as an ambulance driver and was a PFC. He served under Patton's 3rd Army.

He owned and operated a Kawasaki motorcycle shop in Carbondale for several years called "Gene's Cycle Shop."

He was an over-the-road truck driver, providing goods all across the United States. He was known as "Trucker."

He was a crop farmer; he loved fishing and loved to sit, tell stories and talk.

Gene is survived by his children, David (Mary) Stevens of West Frankfort, Linda Farley of Herrin and Marlene (Glenn) Eckert of Gainsville; Fla.; grandchildren Nicole (Dennis) Gade of Marion, Elliot Stevens of West Frankfort and Russell Stevens of St. Louis, Mo.; great-grandchildren Chase and Brooklyn Stevens; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Laverne, Bill and James Stevens; a brother-in-law, Bruce Farley; son Daniel Stevens; and a twin daughter, Dorene Stevens, twin of Marlene.

Funeral services for Eugene "Gene" Stevens will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, with Pastor Larry Dean Worthen officiating in Crain Pleasant Grove Murdale Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Full Military honors will be accorded by the Illinois Honor Guard and Murphysboro American Legion, Post 127.

Visitation will be from noon until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Memorials can be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.
