MARION -- COVID-19 continues to lurk in Marion Unit 2 schools, with Joe Bleyer, president of board of education, saying at Tuesday night's meeting, "We have had a lot of COVID issues hit our buildings. They really have been hit hard by it."

Teacher shortages have been acute, Bleyer said. "We even had our superintendent and assistant superintendent called back into duty to substitute teach."

The board approved Kyle Schmitt as a new sixth-grade math teacher at Marion Junior High School, and he was introduced to the board under COVID social-distancing guidelines.

In addition to Bleyer, board members present were Marc Henshaw, Cindy Gibbons, John Barwick, Steve Cook and Brice Wesley. Board member Patty Bundren was absent.

In other personnel recommendations, the board voted 6-0 to approve Brendan Betz as physical education teacher at Washington Elementary.

And the board approved an anti-bullying policy.
