Du Quoin opens its heart to Kentucky

The Du Quoin and Benton fire departments, along with Abbott EMS, put together a donation drive for devastated families in the Mayfield, Kentucky area literally overnight. The final donation delivery will be taken to Kentucky on Friday.

The fire station at 30 S. Division St. has been the Du Quoin collection point, and it quickly filled up with household items, shelter supplies, non-perishables, baby supplies, personal care supplies and pet food/supplies.

Mayor Guy Alongi posted on Facebook that he and his wife, Rose, stopped at the station with some supplies a few days ago, and they were overwhelmed by the response.

"Thank you all for your great kindness and generosity," he wrote to Du Quoin residents. "It has been an honor to witness first hand such a humbling act of community outreach and support.

"(Benton) Mayor Fred Kondritz and I are proud of the Benton and Du Quoin fire departments - along with all the fire departments in southern Illinois who are coordinating and helping with this drive."
